Who is this Herobrine people have been talking about?

I can't understand the explanation on the Minecraft wiki. Anybody know? My friend says he appears in the caves and such. Why can't I find him?

Herobrine is Steve (the default Minecraft character) white eyes. It was a myth that players started around 4chan. Herobrine never existed in Minecraft, but there was a patch that said "Removed Herobrine" an indication that Notch was playing along with the speculation.

Actually in pretty much every single Minecraft update they add "Removed Herobrine" in one way or another from what I've seen. In that sense he is technically part of the game now, as a running joke and I am convinced that one day he'll start popping up (albeit rarely) and scaring the heck out of people.
