Why does it matter how reddit does it?
I already know of a way to do it.
I guess it's a good thing to know if their method works. I'm estimating what it is, but I can't be for sure.
Reddit uses different images in different subReddits.
I think they use something like a voting system.
I can't be sure.
But I think that would work for my idea too.
Seems like a complex UX to make .... and where should something like that be placed? settings on a board? settings for the site? I'll figure that out on my own.

RE: So I'm thinking

They use a voting system yes for up and down voting posts and comments.

so the comments contain the CSS and Image files that are then uploaded as banners?
is that done automatically? or does someone have to manually put those images in?

well that sucks. so someone on the reddit team has to take the most uprated post and install the css and images ...
that seems terribly inefficient. but it may have it's upsides though (security)

Wait. The CSS and Images for what?
You said banners, they're manual.
I assume you mean something else.

It's not manual I don't think, it has to be automatic or I doubt they could keep up.

This is what I would think.
I guess it doesn't matter what they are doing. I"m going to do my own thing and hopefully it manages
