1. Find some Easter Eggs & Glitches

There are many notable Easter Eggs such as The Notched Pickaxe, The Legend Of King Arthur and The Headless Horseman to be found. If you look closely enough there are also a great many glitches such as hovering swords, displaced characters and missing mountainsides to be discovered. I once had a dragon skeleton spawn in mid-air and fall right on my house in Windhelm with no apparent cause or reason.

2. Go shopping

Perhaps the most productive waste of time is to visit those shops in Skyrim you never usually take notice of. If you’re like me you only ever go to Blacksmiths, General Stores and on occasion Alchemy shops but there are a whole bunch of shops in Skyrim that also have useful things.

The Khajiit to be found outside most of the main holds are a good example of this. You can find questionable items at bargain prices, most commonly Moon Sugar and Skooma. Not to mention you can pawn off your stolen goods while you’re at it. The stalls in Riften, Windhelm and Solitude also frequently stock some hard to find items so it’s nice to check in with them every now and then too, especially if you craft jewellery or potions.

3. Look for trouble

It can be fun to see just how much you can get away with in a hold before the guards take notice . Try sneaking around and breaking into stores or pick-pocketing people just for the heck of it. This can be an especially amusing pass time if you didn’t specialize in being a Thief or Assassin; not getting caught is a real challenge then!

Of course if you are a Thief/Assassin you can always look for trouble by wandering the roadsides around Skyrim and messing with Thalmor Convoys, Bandits and guards escorting prisoners. A somewhat fun but useless thing to do is to attack The Stormcloak Camps and Imperial Camps in the wilderness depending on which faction you chose to support. Usually that’s good for a laugh or two and maybe even a level up.

4. Decorate your home

We’ve all been there. Does that armor look good on that manikin? Maybe I should put Dawnbreaker on the weapon rack? Even though this is ultimately useless it’s always nice to be comfortable with the things in and around your home. With Hearthfire this plays a much more important part of the overall game and your building skills will be put to the test while you smith nails and gather wood to construct your home just the way you want it. How much time you spend on this really is entirely up to you but this is definitely one of the top time wasters to focus on…in fact it’s such a waste of time most people won’t be bothering with Hearthfire.

5. Improve your skills

It’s tedious to level up some skills and it can take next to forever but if you want to pass some time and have something to show for it this is the way to go. Go buy a bunch of iron ignot and leather strips and wack away at making iron daggers or cast soul trap on your horse a thousand times to max out your conjuration skill. You can even piss off a town guard, hold in your block button and just sit back and watch as your block skill climbs if your so inclined…
