I checked out a few over the last couple of years (Unity, Unity 3D, RPG Maker, Unreal, etc.) and GMS is the easiest to get in to.
You can make a game with only drag and drop (no coding). If, however, you want to get in to more complex things, you need to use Game Maker Language. It is basically a dumbed down C# language.
It seemed overwhelming at first, but their forums are far better than Unity's. After a couple of weeks of copy pasting other people's codes, you'll get it.
Unity is certainly the more powerful engine, but as long as you stick to 2D, anything is possible in GMS.
Games like Stardew Valley, Zelda, Matching Games, Isometric, RPG's, roguelikes, platformers, etc. can all be made... it really is that good.
They have some sort of free version that has some scripting limitations, so you can play around with it before you sink some $$$ in it.

Fun of making a game is by creating it from scratch tho.

Involvement of both graphical representations in addition to code, physics, etc. is what gives a game it's personal touch that makes it just that better from rest. I also try and stay away from using other peoples code as in the world of coding it is unethical to essentially copy and paste what other people have made from scratch and use it as your own (even with mentioning them).

I'd say if you have long term game development plans then C# and Unity is the way to go. But considering gamemaker has it's simple usage and expansion then it can be good idea. You can see that with simple drag and drop and actions, you can get the game to work. In some case you may have to use language for doing other stuff like gravity and enemy logic.

I have no idea about real making games and programming but I have used the free version of Game Maker Studio a few months ago and I liked it. There are some tutorials on youtube so using them I managed to make a simple platform game. If someone is interested in making games then Game Maker is a great way to start, it's not too difficult.
