Eye strain linked to gaming is definitely real. I've experienced this many times, usually when I've been in front of a screen for 8+ hours. And since I'm a regular gamer I've definitely had a decrease in vision and had to get glasses. However, there are such thing as gaming glasses that can help protect you from eye strain.

Thanks for the info, @PenguinManiac. That gives me a good place to start. At the very least, I should look into these for my kiddo to protect her eyes in advance. She doesn't really spend as much time on the computer (or console) as I do, but why take any risks, right?

Yes, I would definitely want the clear ones for myself. I like to dabble in artwork from time to time, so that would be in my best interest.

Do any of you use drops in yours eyes? My eyes get dry too, so I've started using artificial tears on occasion. You need the other type of eye drops to get rid of redness though.

Every time I play all my body gets strained but my mouth hahaha don't think anything bad, it's just that I focused so much on playing that my mouth always opens automatically. It's something very weird and everybody make fun of me :(

It is common to get our eyes strained due to excess playing games. It could possibly nothing more than just eye strain. Just go and walk around for some time to get you relax feel. If the problem persist instantly consult your doctor rather to get advice from video game website boards.

I work and play all day long on my pc so my eyes get very strained. Usually, using eye drops does the trick, and I can immediately go back to my screen. Any brand I can get from over-the-counter works fine for me.

I think Windows 10 has a night light mode that reduces colors on the screen so your eyes won't get strained as much. For me though I'm wearing glasses that has anti-glare so I don't suffer from as much effect as you guys may have had. Still, it's a good idea to take a break every few hours while playing to eat, wash your face, take a walk, etc. It makes you think better when you play again and you won't have to live with the shame of playing video games all day long.

Well yes, I highly agree with you..Actually right now while I'm typing this comment I was just playing on my PC for about 5 hours straight, My eyes hurts me a bit, I believe that sitting by your PC or TV (Console) is very bad for your eyes and also you body because if you're playing for many hours that means that you won't be able to exercise which make it bad..I know that it's harmful but I'm kind of addicted to gaming.

I can say that I got strained on my eyes was when I first started playing PC games. Honestly, nowadays it doesn't affect that much, and I do wear my specs when I play either on my PC or console. Right now my eyesight is weak, and I guess I'm used to it now. Playing in the dark does strain my eyes more though.

I have never experienced this; at least, not when playing games. This is meant to be fun and not stressful or eye-straining. This is one of the reasons why I take breaks every now and then when playing.

The only thing that gets strained a bit when I'm playing is my brain. And I often consider this healthy for my 'noodle'. I don't overdo it though. This is another reason why I take short breaks during a gaming session

Taking a break is always a great relief for strained eyes. Moreover as you said, it is the screen brightness that causes the maximum damage. Strict monitoring of the brightness meter can help to alleviate the ill effects.
lol yes, I ended up having glasses 2 years into having a full time job in front of a computer. But hey, my new glasses have anti-glare, which means I can see clearly and not have trouble staring at the screen for a long amount of time because of glare or brightness. All in all, still worth it, and I get to have glasses that turn into shades whenever I go outside. Pretty sweet deal if you ask me.

Excess exposure to screen can cause blurring of vision and watering from eyes as well. This is mainly the result of overstrained eyes.

How often do you experience this? Do you then limit your game time then?

This is true, that is why we should limit of gaming time. My eyes would get heavy and I feel dizzy when I am at my mobile phone playing or at my laptop writing. When I fee this, I stop and go out and gaze at the green leaves of the trees and the lawn. I would do this for 15 minutes and I can feel that my eyes are okay already. No, I won't still go back to my phone but instead get a glass of water and drink or maybe find something to eat.

I try to get up and take a break every now and then, because I do a lot of computer-based work even outside of video game play. I know I'm already showing symptoms of ulnar tunnel in my left arm (Left hand is primary and I draw, too) and want to prevent it along with any eye damage, especially because I never needed vision correction to start with and hope to keep it that way. I don't really use eyedrops for eye-strain related reasons since I don't need them, though.

After becoming aware of all the hazards caused by screens I have strictly limited my time of exposure. Though this demands a lot of self control but after analyzing all the long term hazards associated with it, I opt for staying away and indulging in activities other than gaming

The problem becomes more intense for people who have work related exposure to screens. It is like almost doubling the normal exposure time.

I'm sorry for the health issues that you are facing with your left hand. But it is good that you are careful with your eyes and try to maintain your health and vision.

Using an anti glare glasses is really a good option. I'm thinking of getting one for me as well. My eyes have started showing symptoms of blurring vision after continuous exposure to screen. Maybe these anti glare glasses will provide me with the much needed relief.

Can you please tell me if they are custom made or are readily available on any eye glass shop?

They were available at the glass shop but it's on the mid-high end (around $100). I figure if I was gonna get glasses, might as well get a good end one so it will last for a long time. The expensive part was about the lens, they were anti-glare, and they darken automatically when you step outside, so they turn into sunglasses.

This is pretty expensive. I think on Indian rupees it will be close to Rs 6500/- This is really more than I can afford. I hope I get some lower priced versions of anti glare lenses.

Anyways thanks a lot for your quick reply.

I experienced this with my Nintendo DS when I was younger and now I wear contacts and glasses. I was an idiot playing on that thing for hours on end like it was terrible. Now I have an eye care package setting on my Gaming Dell Monitor so it helps my eyes a lot during extended periods of time.

Yes, you are right. We have to limit our time in gaming, especially when we do it in a mobile phone. It having a bit small screen can really put a strain in our eyes in addition to the light of the screen.
Our eyes are precious, so we should not abuse it.
