CDs and discs also degrade in time due to misuse or just the quality of the disc itself, so it's better to have your library on an online account where you can just get it whenever you want. I remember buying PS2 games as a kid and they made it from cheap discs where I'm from, so they degrade quickly even without scratches after a few times used, leading you to buy them all over again. You can imagine how grateful I am that I can just store and download my games online now.
I still remember scratching up my Age of Empires II CD when I was a kid, I cried like a baby for a couple of days until my parents bought a new one. I've been pretty careful with my discs over the years though, I'm glad that nowadays you don't have to worry about that aspect.

Yeah you know the logic as a kid was crappy. Disc not working? Blow on it and wipe it with a cloth, see what happens. Oh, you're scatching it more? Wipe it again and maybe the game would work. Man, that was the fastest way to ruin your disc. Don't matter how many smudges it has, as long as you don't wipe it up it will still work, but you just couldn't help yourself.

Anymore I buy all of my games digitally. I don't spend as much as I used to on games, so it's nice being able to simply wait until Steam has a ridiculous sale and snagging what I've been interested in at that point. I really like that Steam keeps all of my purchases in my library, that way when I buy or build a new rig, all of my games are ready to be installed and I don't have to search around for the discs to reinstall my games. Not to mention some games (I'm talking to you, Heroes of Might & Magic IV) required upwards of 4 different discs to install the game. Ridiculous!

Usually I buy my PC games digitally from G2A or Steam. As far as my consoles, there's a little online app called Mercari where people buy and sell stuff and I've scored some new AAA titles for 30-40 bucks from little game stores putting themselves on there.

For me "where" depends on the type of game I'm picking up. If I'm not sure whether or not I'd like the game enough for keeps, I'll usually pick up a physical copy of a game at a place like Gamestop, Walmart or whichever has the best deal, because those I can physically return and perhaps refund if it turns out I don't care about it that much. If it's a game that I'm absolutely, positively sure I'd like to keep around for whatever reason, or the sale is absolutely stunning, then I'll go digital and buy from Steam/console shops/etc.

Don't shops just undervalue games where you can barely get $5 for a large number of games? I think that would be a rip-off for me and I'd rather keep my games instead of having cheap change exchanged for them. There will also come a time where you will miss those games and want to play again, so it's a lot better to keep the physical copies on storage since you'll probably play it again.

There are games I just don't miss/generally play enough to keep around, especially because I'm pretty busy nowadays with other things. By that point, even chump change holds more value than the game itself; a digital game simply can't be returned *at all* in most instances.

Yeah, I used to wipe disks everytime hoping that they would work again. Sadly, little me didn't know better and I didn't have enough brain cells to Google out a solution. Thank God games got cheap fast around that time.

I don't buy my games I trade them for another, and if I must purchase one I'll make my friends aware to avoid buying same game, that would be a waste, I don't really patronize gamestores.

Amazon, Walmart and Ebay are my favorite online stores. I already bought it on other sites and even in physical stores, but usually I usually buy only online.

PS2 games were a pain since you just couldn't install it and forget about the disc. The disc had to work every single time for you to play something. That's kinda why I preferred PC games over console. For PC, just install it once and it will work flawlessly until you either uninstall or you reformat the PC entirely. For the PS2, you gotta take care of the discs a lot more since you use them regularly. The frequent removal from the case or booklet would end up scratching or damaging the disc, and further use even without scratches will still make the disc unplayable eventually.

I just mostly purchase off of Steam or Battle.net these days. (Since they have what I like to play most of the time.) Can't be bothered for physical copies of anything anymore since I move way too much to justify hauling around a gigantic library. I made that mistake 10 years ago when I had to sell off a massive rare books and video game library. When you're constantly moving every 6 months it's impossible to hold onto much of anything but the bare essentials anymore haha.

That sucks. Oh well, at least you don't have to worry about losing games if they're all in one digital location. Still, I always appreciate a good collection of books and physical copies of games. It's a shame you had to get rid of them. Can I ask why you were on the move a lot? And did you at least save your favorites so you can start up another collection someday when your position is a more stable one, location-wise?

Yeah losing stuff while moving is always a pain. You'd be surprised what people also steal during that time too. Someone stole a pair of high end Red Wing steel toe boots I had and religiously took great care of all the time and a few other items as well that I had account for prior to getting them on the truck. I move a lot due to the nature of my work. No two ways about it honestly haha. I saved only a few things that were more nostalgic than of any monetary/rarity value. I may rebuild someday but I doubt it mostly because lots of the stuff I had aren't easily found again and are commanding 10x's the price I originally got them for 10+ years ago. In fact one franchise I was dedicated to is so obscure in the mainstream that collectors zealously guard their collections and never let go. I had a very complete collection of that one franchise and there's only one person who has almost everything and they're in Sweden if that says anything. As for the books...that's way worse than the video games cause I had a lot of rare military texts, history texts, medical texts, automotive journals and first edition classics as well as obscure music sheets that interest specific collectors and historical societies.

Oh man, I'm sorry. I hope you get yourself in a situation where you can just stay in one place. Being on the move a lot sounds romantic and all that, but eventually you'll have to find someplace stable to settle. I'm sure when that time comes you'll have a badass new set of stuff to collect. For me I've always wanted to collect books as well, but I never find myself having enough space, so at the most, my collection currently is my Steam library, which isn't much since it has 27 games. Oh well. It's a start. Anyway, good luck on the path!

Lol space is always an issue haha. Floor to ceiling shelving installed everywhere and still didn't have enough space to hold everything. It took 5 months to completely offload. Thanks for the encouragement. Money is money so even if I'm roving around I'm not at all that upset, save when working with morons haha. I at least can say I had a collection, not many can say the same. It was a really awesome lifetime opportunity most never get. Back then I was collecting just to collect and because I had the means to. I never had a full appreciation of everything I owned to be frank- save for a few things like that one franchise I was super into. If I ever start up again I'm only limiting to certain things and that's it. Most collectors fall into that trap eventually and I honestly don't wanna be like that. I want to be able to tell someone about my collection with equal zeal with everything rather than having prizes just cause I could.

Yeah I feel like most collectors start out their set with passion or as a hobby, but as soon as the snowball gets bigger it's more of bragging rights and being a completionist, and the initial sentiment to the items get lost in favor of having a complete set. And yeah, space is definitely an issue. I plan on having a large place someday so I can store my stuff. I'm pretty sentimental about things I own, things I've bought with my own money, so I never have the heart to throw them away. In turn they are just in my closet never to see the light of day. I'd like to put them on a nice shelf or something one of these days.

Haha yeah most definitely it did start off passionately but the whole collecting part got addictive. Plus with my jobs putting me right in line of fire of really good stuff all the time back then didn't help either. It just happened. However unlike most people if I ever get back to where I was years ago, I'd do loaners to traveling game conventions- they always need stuff for panels and exhibits. Also open up to private tours now and then as well as make it a makeshift museum of sorts for fun. Let other people appreciate it and enjoy it too.

I buy 99% of my games on the Steam Store. I rarely buy games from a physical gaming store shop as I mostly use steam for my gaming needs.

Pretty much. Permanent games that only you can play? Yes please! No more having to share games when you don't want to, no more trying to trade games for a small percentage of their overall price for a loss. It's a lot more convenient since you can simply sign in to an account and download games you already own on any PC. It's that simple, and that's why I don't look anywhere else for games. No more physical copies for me.
