When the HD dvd wars was in full swing, I thought red laser was going to win because the XBOX 360 had one. I was so sure of it. But movie studios were split. Then the big announcement came out that Walmart was going to carry only Blu ray DVDs. Thus ending the format war overnight.

Never really saw the point of buying a HD DVD drive or a blu ray one for that matter. I still rock my regular dvd player that I bought back in 2009. It was no secret that blu ray was going to win as it just made more sense. Microsoft was just fighting a useless battle.

I was seriously considering it, but honestly, after Microsoft lost the HD DVD, they should've made a new extension to play Blu-Rays, because they could've made more money after it became wildly popular. But honestly, the Xbox 360 wasn't a media console to begin with. It was strictly meant for gaming like the original Xbox. Microsoft kinda killed it with the Xbox One now, because having a media oriented game console isn't really going to get them good attention from the gaming community, because that's basically what decides the death of a console. Consumers who are looking for a good media center should just make their own out of a Raspberry Pi if they're really inclined to make one.

I was never really into the HD DVD drive. I could use a blu ray drive on my computer for storage reasons, but I knew there was a lot of hype around the blu drive players.

No I did not, and I'm glad that I didn't either. This was was back when I would still use my basic, little, portable DVD player. There was really no need for it. I have a laptop that plays DVDs too. There was simply no need. I think the 360s played DVD at some point too. The point is, it was a pretty needless add-on.

Oh, I know. I prefer only Blue Ray DVDs anyway. The platform seems to have a better and clearer picture.

Unfortunately, with the movie studios split, I purchased a HD DVD drive and owned a PS3 that I played Bluray's on. Kept my HD DVD movies long after they lost the war, and even picked up some other ones super cheap in bargain bins at various stores. This ended up working out to my benefit as many of the movie studios allowed me to send in my HD DVD's and get the Bluray version for $1.00/conversion. Ended up getting around 30 Bluray's for much cheaper than just buying the movie itself would have been. I thought the HD DVD was going to win purely because of Sony's track record with licensed products like this... guess they finally won one of them.

I did! Have about 15 movies to go with it too haha! I still feel silly for the purchase, but I refuse to admit it to my friends. It still sits out on my entertainment center just in case someone feels like watching Run Lola Run on HD-DVD. I figure eventually it will be vintage and expensive and some future hipster will want it and i'll make a killing off of it, but that probably won't happen. I'm not getting rid of it though!

No I didn't. I only replaced my older DVD drive from my 2005 manufactured XBOX 360 because it got battered somehow. Weird, I always thought DvD Blu-ray was going to be a temporary fashion tech trend and everybody is going to abandon it.

I thought the same thing. Joke's on us, huh?
I think HD-DVD failed in the simplest of way: Blu-ray just sounded cooler so everyone went that direction. Maybe that's silly, but I can't really see any other reason that the format war between the two was so short-winded. I mean, it ended FAST, I don't think HD-DVD lasted a full year before it had been fully defeated..

I did get the HD-DVD drive back in 2009 but sold it a little later to a pawn shop. They gave me way more than what I payed for. I remember it came with a Batman movie. The image quality was actualy pretty good. I always wondered how it was possible to transfer so much data (video and sound) through a regular USB cable. I wonder if its value will ever rise with time as an antique item.
