What Series Do You Think Would Make a Good MMO?

It's a popular question people think about. I know a LOT of people want some sort of Harry Potter MMO, and frankly I do too. Have it start at Hogwarts, where you go through say, your last year of "school" ( as a tutorial area). Then "graduate" and be a witch or wizard in the world, and have stuff like dragon taming, or being an Auror, or anything really.

I think the Firefly series would also make an interesting MMO. Maybe as a crew member or captain of a smuggler (?) crew, and "quests" are jobs, like the ones they did in the show.

What series do you think would make a good MMO? Could be books, movies, tv shows, comics, or whatever!

Harry Potter would be cool! At this point, though, I don't think they could really do anything unique besides have the IP to draw people in.

As far as stuff I'd like to see, Heroes(the TV show) could make for a great story-driven MMO. You're on your own personal quest that leads you to discover your power, be abducted by the company, and then have the choice to join them or escape to join the resistance-type crowd. That's the intro and the rest could be more story driven quests.

Raids and dungeons could revolve around story that would lead you to kill a sylar-type character who has amassed a ton of powers and needs to be stopped. Or something to do with the company.

Like I said though, other than story-driven gameplay, I'm not sure what else as far as combat, spells, etc. could be brought to the table :p

I think Game Of Thrones could pull it off. I can see a good run in a short period of time but it would have to be updated with new content a lot to not get stale.

Yes, I can think of a plentyful number of series that ca in theory work as a MMO, even I think a talented and ambitious developer could make a good MMO out of a series. Pokémon is the first franchise I thought, we right now have something similar to a MMO with Poké GO for smartphones, but it lacks the scope and diversity of a typical MMO game for PC. The another one is Fallout, survival is an alluring concept which attract all kind of gamers, not a poor concept to convey into a MMORPG, Bethesda already lent elder scrolls to a third party that made a MMORPG spinoff, therefore is not so crazy to think It may consider something like that in the future.

Harry Potter would be awesome if done right! Though the first thing that really came to my mind was also the Song of Ice and Fire (Game of Thrones) series. It has a diverse terrain, plenty of races/houses and differing magic types for classes, and an amazingly vast lore. Further islands and new cultures could be added easily for updates.

A really well done Tolkien Universe one, with Shadow of Mordor like graphics and gameplay, something new gen and fast paced with the magic and wonder from Tolkiens books

Unfortunately the closest thing to a Harry Potter MMO right now is Gary'sMod Harry Potter RP servers... and none of them are really serious. There's just a bunch of trolls running around screaming dumb stuff the whole time. But you're right, I'd love something legit created. Wouldn't it be cool if you could rank up on servers and join the Quidditch team or something? That only certain level students could go to Hogsmeade or the Forbidden Forest. There could be random Death Eater attacks that involve the entire school in massive school-wide battles. Actually partaking and going to classes earn you spells and stuff. Man.. why isn't this a thing yet?

Yeah, I have to agree with HP game, although, I do not really know how anyone would crerate one. There are many ways they could really destroy it. I would like if it had exploring, pve, less pvp as most MMO games force pvp a lot.

I would like to see Witcher MMO myself. I wonder how that would work.

Definitely "Westworld". Place where you get to choose to be a hero or a villain, where you can customize yourself before entering the world, do literally anything you want, filled with so called "hosts" which are robots. The idea is amazing for an MMO. After all, I did hear the producers say that they wven found an inspiration in RPG games, so that says a lot about it.

You're right, there's so much to live up to if you are really thinking of doing a HP world. HP has so many elements that can be brought into the gaming world, it's just a case of making it playable but believable at the same time. It just has to be well done or nothing at all. I'm not against PvP, but I do get turned off by PvP-heavy games.

Sorry to change the direction of this discussion a little bit, but I'm thinking a lot of the anime series would make great MMORPG. I'm sure some of them already are. I'm thinking Naruto, Fairy Tail, Attack on Titan, etc. But instead of letting players play characters from the anime, let everyone create their own and just focus on translating the world's concept into game mechanics.

PvP is welcome, but lots of games force it too much. Its sad to see games that have such a great potential to be something more than pure PvP get treated with only PvP updates, deals, especially when it comes to paying for special gear or what not. Quidditch would be quite interesting though.

Omg that is actually a really good idea! Westworld would fit so well into the MMO genre. You could even make it into a RPG or FPS, or both together. Hell, you could even turn it into a survival game - trying to survive hosts gone mad while trapped in the wilderness or something similar.

Westworld is one of the best tv series and I would definitely play it if it was ever made into a game.

It already has tons of fantasy and sci-fi based things in the series so making a game from it would not be that hard. Imagine how beautiful the area and environment would be.

Harry Potter and Song of Ice and Fire for sure.

Harry Potter has a rich universe that has even been expanded outside Hogwarts (there are so many other academies!) and the lore is complex enough in order to provide a fairly diverse game that can withstand the test of time. However, after the hype and subsequent death of Pottermore, I'm rather skeptical on online projects for the series...

ASOIAF has geography, language, lore, mythology, lands, clans and families. It has dragons and "zombies" and also deep political and complex alliances, it would work wonderfully... If it tries to keep itself separate from the canon characters and only focuses on expanding the universe, IMO. However I would only like to see this as a project after A Dream of Spring is published. Which is never...

If given in the right hands and without strict rules it could live up easily. People overlook a lot of things about it. There are many fans who would probably love to get their hands on such a title. And you could really pull it off by introducing other schools, not just Hogwarts. Hell, even the muggle world.

How about Sons of Anarchy? Think gangs would be clans and there would be missions to raid and take down enemy territories and win money. With the money you could but better weapons and hire thugs and new members, bribe the police etc. I think give the series popularity it would really strike a note.

I'd like to try that out after the flop of APB was, which didn't really create a cop vs gangs type of gameplay. The store available and the different kind of events that could take place would be enough to make anyone want to at least try out of the mmo if one ever came out.

Dragons... I like the concept of taming a dragon, creating armour, fly and check out new worlds and conquer alpha dragons. Good thing about this is there are to characters that you need to level up. The dragon and the pilot.

My thoughts exactly. There are crime MMOs or rather there used to be I have been out of the online gaming scene for a while. It's a good idea. The problem with those, in my opinion, is that they promise a "thug life" but it's really hard to create the feeling you know? I mean anyone can commit a crime in a game, now to feel a part of a gang is another matter entirely. That's why I think SOA would be a good model. The show gives this "Criminal Organization" feeling quite well. Imagine if it turned into a game.

Harry Potter would definitely be amazing. I'm pretty sure there are some multiplayer roleplay servers on Garry's Mod that do just that, but having a game to deal just with that would be a whole different story. It's weird they haven't thought about it.
As for ASOIAF, I think that it would need a little overhaul to make a playable MMO out of it. A lot of its appeal comes from the story itself, and even though the lore and the setting would work great indeed, dealing with such huge factions would be hard. Politics and the balance between conflicting sides is what made GoT so interesting and different from any other fantasy series, and I'm not sure how well that could play out in a MMO. There can't be any single leaders, and taking decisions along with thousands of player is unfeasible. It would turn into a mess in less than a month.

Generally, any series that involves factions/races and schools/training sides, action-packed (fighting is needed, after all) and that doesn't solely focus on a single character can be eligible. Take My Hero Academia or Attack on Titan, for instance. Or even The Last Airbender. They would all make for great MMOs, imho, but they would be so incredibly complicated to make.
