Does anyone think that Rockstar went a little overboard on the violence and inappropriateness front? One recent example is I killed someone by throwing snowballs at him.
I'm under the feeling that hey, its a Rockstar game, it should be offensive - however what do you guys think?

I think that GTA V provided a lot of comical violence, such as the snowball killing you mentioned. Comical violence is what the GTA series revolves around, and the game developers have definitely mastered this, as they seem to never run out of ideas on how to kill people.
I don't think that GTA V is too violent simply because the violence is so outrageous and unrealistic that it's funny as opposed to being flat out disturbing. It's a fun game to play and laugh at, and due to the creativity, it never gets old.

That's awesome! There's no question that the violence in GTA is way over-the-top and comical, but it is what it is. Like Mackmax mentioned, it's almost the identity of the GTA series. There's nothing wrong with that, and that's why the Mature rating is on the game!

Yeah, we would just get used to it. For example, back when GTA Vice City was released, a lot of people would have thought that it was quite disturbing to have fun by running cars over people. But its quite normal now.

It's GTA. It always has been this way, remember GTA Vice City, San Andreas and others. It's the identity of the series. I wouldn't count it too violent. Afterall, that's what it sells, a violent free world simulator.

I know, I've been paying the serious since III came out while I was in high-school. I don't think the game need to change. Too many people argue that the games violence corrupts our children. Well I want to present to you an old children's story that was collected in Grimm Fairy Tales.
How some children played at slaughtering said:
There once was a father who slaughtered a pig, and his children saw that. In the afternoon, when they began playing, one child said to the other, "you be the little pig, and I'll be the butcher." He then took a shiny knife and slit his little brother's throat.

Their mother was upstairs in a room bathing another child, and when she heard the cries of her son, she immediately ran downstairs. Upon seeing what had happened, she took the knife out of her son's throat and was so enraged that she stabbed the heart of the other boy, who had been playing the butcher. Then she quickly ran back to the room to tend to her child in the bathtub, but while she was gone, he had drowned in the tub. Now the woman became so frightened and desperate that she did not allow the neighbors to comfort her and finally hung herself. When her husband came back from the fields and saw everything, he became so despondent that he died soon after.

A CHILDRENS STORY! This story is at least 200 years old. If they think GTA is bad they need to read more.

The mentality of people has changed drastically in the last 200 years or so.
Kids know things they aren't supposed to know, thanks to the exposure they get in such an early age, via television or (of course games).

Thats kind of my point. Kids are supposed to be more in touch with violence as they are exposed to it more in movies, television, and music. Its far less likely to corrupt them today. However the story from 200 years ago was posted as an example to show that exposing kids to violence is nothing new. Kids weren't corrupted by it back then but I'm sure if you showed it today it would give kids nightmares. If anything our shows, movies, music, and games are a bit tamer today then what they were. The original story of Cinderella had the Step-Sisters cutting off parts of their feet to try to fit into the "golden slipper". I don't exactly recall that in the Disney version. If violent stories from the past didn't lead to end of morality when children weren't so inoculated against them, it certainly wont today.

I don't think it is too violent at all. There are ratings on games for a reason. And This game was meant to be the way it is.

How can you call something too violent when the essence of the game is violence? It's like saying certain drugs are at fault because they cause way too many side effects. The rating for the game is there for a reason and we all know GTA franchise for the violence they bring.

I find it always funny when I talk with my friends and people who have played GTA V. They know what the game is and they feel it is to be expected. So why does the media have big hissyfits around GTA V and its violence? This is after they showed 5 minutes of bombing in the middle east or some terrorist hostage video.

You killed a guy by throwing snowballs at him? How exactly did you do that? Were there rocks in the snowballs :)

I haven't played Gta 5 yet, but I will soon, but I haven't heard anyone claiming it to be too violent. I remember when GTA first came out and people were disturbed because you could kill cops.

I think it's too violent for children. It isn't for me. It actually doesn't seem any more violent than the FPS games I like to play.

As you can probably tell by my avatar, I'm quite a big fan of GTAV.

Is the game too violent? Nobody can come on here and say its not a violent game, of course it is. You only have to play the first 2 minutes, to know exactly what you can expect.

As for being TOO violent? I think that depends on the individual. Your obviously not going to let your 8 year old play it are you, that's for sure but you can go to the movies and hear and see a lot worse.

End of the day, rockstar have never tried to tone the games down, with a title such as GRAND THEFT AUTO...I think you should know what to expect?

No? All the GTAs host the same level of violence. You can mow people over indiscriminately. I'd let any age and type play it. It's a game. It's not saving the mentality of the youth; that's censorship. If they end up doing the bad things, it's not because of a video game. It's due to parental supervision, not knowing your child. You can't blame media for being violent.

I think they should keep doing what they are doing. It's not bad, it's not right. It's just there. It's a game. To be enjoyed within the programmed specifications. If it has some violence (or tons) oh well. It's just how it is.

Some smaller children can't handle that level of violence without getting nightmares. My step daughter has nightmares if she watches too much violence. I think it should depend on the kid and their level of maturity.

Well of course you'd have to judge the kids mentality, and what parent/guardian wouldn't before letting their kids on some form of entertainment? I just think that any kid, no matter the age, should not be held back from content because it's 'dangerous' and 'best left to talk about later' because that later may never come and they might end up abusing it and saying it's the reason they murdered people. That's just shirking the blame. Or in the case of nightmares, if the kid has them, I wouldn't probably suggest those genre of games anyways. I'd give them something more suited. But that is not censorship, it's merely guiding them down a proper path.

I think this is down to the individual. If you (or your children) don't like violence then your not going to be buying this game. Its not as if its hidden and you buy the game not realising what its going to be like.

Is it right or wrong to have this level of violence in a game? Well in my opinion of course its acceptable, end of the day its just a game and a very popular game as well. Some people say it makes people more violent in real life but I don't go along with that argument, a game isn't going to turn somebody into a serial killer.

I think the whole company motto was do what no one else is doing. Hence the reason why their games are so popular and sell so well. they are setting new standards in the gaming industry. Gamers have grown up and so should the games. I'm almost 40 and I still play video games. I like to see death and nudity in games.
